Boom Barrier with AMC in Delhi NCR
Boom Barrier
Boom barrier is also known as a boom-gate. It is a bar/ pole pivoted to allow the boom, to block the access of vehicles through a controlled point. The tip of the boom gate usually rises in a vertical arc to an almost vertical position. Boom gates are usually counterweighted, so that the pole can be easily tipped. Boom gates are generally paired either end to end, or counteract to block traffic in both the directions of the road. Some of the boom gates also have another (second) arm which is 300 to 400 mm below than the upper arm when lowered down, to increase the approach visibility, and it hangs on links so it lies flat among the main boom bar/pole as the barrier is raised up. Some boom barriers are also featuring a fulcrum roughly half way, where as the boom barrier is raised up, the outward half stays horizontal, with the boom barrier resembling an upside down ‘L’ when raised up.
Automatic Boom Barrier
There are many technologies available for an automatic boom-barrier. Electro-mechanical is one of the technologies available out there, which is usually used because of its reliability. Different types of technologies are mostly manufacturer specific. Boom barrier with electro-mechanical technology comes with a 24VDC drive units, that can run continuously without generating any amount of heat, so electro-mechanical boom-barriers can be operated repeatedly and in an intensive duty-cycle.

Usage
Boom gates are commonly found at level crossings, drawbridges, checkpoints, parking facilities and entrances to secured areas. Boom barriers are now the common method for controlling passages through the toll booths, and they can also be spotted on some freeway entrance ramps, they are automatically controlled to drop down, to control traffic in the case of an accident clean-up or road blockers without the requirement to dispatch road workers, or law enforcement to use a vehicle to block the way. Some boom barriers are automatic and electronic, others are operated manually. Sometimes manual gates are hung in a manner of a simple/normal gate which is hinged horizontally. In some places, boom barriers are installed across rural streets as a traffic-control measure, avoiding the traffic, while granting access to the authorised vehicles such as emergency services to take advantage of the shorter and hassle free more direct route.
